Andrea Kirton, our assistive technology specialist SLT, delivered the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) lecture to 40 Speech and Language Therapy Students at Sheffield University last week. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about AAC, the clients who may use it, the range of low and high tech AAC available and for them to explore some devices.
Hopefully sessions like this will inspire some students to develop their skills in this branch of Speech and Language Therapy. Students were from the Speech Science and the MMedSci in Clinical Communication Studies.
As well as teaching on the course, the team regularly collaborates with the Human Communication Sciences department on research related to AAC and assistive technology.
